Allergy

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to substances that are normally harmless, such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, or food. Allergic reactions can range from mild symptoms like sneezing and itching to severe reactions like anaphylaxis. Allergies are very common in Norway, and many experience worsening symptoms during pollen season.

There are several types of allergies, including pollen allergy (hay fever), food allergy, pet dander allergy, and contact allergy. Some develop allergies in childhood, while others may develop them later in life. Correct diagnosis is important for effective allergy treatment.

Symptoms

  • Sneezing and runny or stuffy nose
  • Itchy, watery, or swollen eyes
  • Skin rash, hives, or eczema
  • Breathing problems or wheezing
  • Cough and throat irritation
  • In severe cases: anaphylactic shock with breathing difficulties and drop in blood pressure

When should you contact a doctor?

  • Symptoms affect sleep, work, or daily life
  • Over-the-counter medications do not provide sufficient relief
  • You are unsure what you are reacting to
  • You experience severe allergic reactions
  • You want an evaluation with allergy testing
  • Your child shows signs of allergy

Treatment

Allergy treatment depends on the type and severity. Antihistamines are the first choice for many allergies and are available both over-the-counter and by prescription. Nasal sprays with corticosteroids can help with nasal congestion. For severe allergies, allergy vaccination (immunotherapy) may be an option, where the body gradually gets used to the allergen. A doctor at Eyr can help assess your symptoms, recommend the correct treatment, and possibly refer you for allergy testing.
