Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is the recommended way to nourish newborns and infants, and the Norwegian Directorate of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. Although breastfeeding is natural, it can present challenges. Many new mothers experience problems with latching, milk production, or pain, and it is important to seek help early.

Lactation support can make a big difference for both mother and child. There are many causes of breastfeeding problems, and most can be resolved with the right support and guidance.

Common challenges

  • Pain during breastfeeding and sore nipples
  • Problems with latching and sucking technique
  • Breast engorgement and blocked milk ducts
  • Breast inflammation (mastitis) with fever and pain
  • Too little or too much milk production
  • Uncertainty about whether the baby is getting enough milk

When should you contact a doctor?

  • Persistent pain during breastfeeding despite correct latching
  • Fever, redness, and swelling in the breast (signs of mastitis)
  • The baby is losing weight or not gaining weight as expected
  • You need advice on medication use during breastfeeding
  • You want guidance on weaning
  • You are concerned about milk production

Treatment

A doctor at Eyr can provide guidance on breastfeeding technique, assess whether breast inflammation is present, and possibly prescribe antibiotics. If medication is needed during breastfeeding, the doctor can advise on safe alternatives. The doctor can also refer you to a lactation consultant or health center if closer follow-up is needed.
