Diarrhoea and Vomiting

Diarrhoea and vomiting are very common ailments, most often caused by a stomach infection due to a virus (gastroenteritis). The condition is usually harmless and resolves on its own within a few days, but it can be unpleasant and lead to fluid loss. Children and the elderly are more susceptible to complications due to dehydration.

Other causes of diarrhoea and vomiting can include food poisoning, bacterial infections, food intolerance, medications, or underlying diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

Symptoms

  • Frequent, loose, or watery stools
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Fever and chills
  • Headache and muscle aches
  • Signs of dehydration: thirst, low urine output, dry mouth, dizziness

When should you contact a doctor?

  • Symptoms last more than three days in adults
  • The child has vomiting for more than 24 hours or diarrhoea for more than two days
  • Signs of dehydration such as low urine production, dizziness, or confusion
  • Blood in the stool or vomit
  • High fever above 39 degrees Celsius
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Recent travel abroad

Treatment

The most important treatment is to maintain fluid balance. Drink plenty of water, and consider using an electrolyte solution (Resorb). Eat light meals and avoid fatty and spicy foods. In children, it is especially important to prevent dehydration. Medications for diarrhoea (loperamide) can be used by adults if needed. A doctor at Eyr can assess the severity, advise on treatment, and prescribe medications or further investigation if necessary.
