Referral

A referral is a letter from a doctor to a specialist or hospital describing your health condition and the need for further investigation or treatment. In Norway, most specialists and hospital departments require a referral from a doctor for you to get an appointment. A doctor at Eyr can assess your needs and write a referral digitally.

It is important to know that you have the right to free choice of treatment, which means that you can choose which hospital or specialist you wish to be referred to.

Common referrals

  • Dermatologist
  • Ear, nose, and throat specialist
  • Orthopedist or physical medicine specialist
  • Gynecologist
  • Psychologist or psychiatrist
  • Ophthalmologist
  • Allergist
  • X-ray, MRI, or other imaging diagnostic examinations
  • Blood tests and laboratory examinations

When should you contact a doctor?

  • You need a referral to a specialist
  • Your GP has a long waiting list
  • You want a second opinion
  • You need imaging diagnostics (X-ray, MRI)
  • You need a referral for physiotherapy
  • You wish to be referred to a specific hospital

How it works

A doctor at Eyr can write a referral after a video consultation where your symptoms and needs are assessed. The referral is sent electronically to the chosen specialist or hospital. Note that some specialists may have their own requirements for investigation before referral. The doctor will inform you about this and ensure that the referral contains the necessary information.
