Heartbreak

Heartbreak is the pain that arises after a breakup, rejection, or loss of a romantic relationship. It is one of the most intense emotional experiences a person can go through, and it is completely normal to react strongly. Heartbreak can feel overwhelming and affect all parts of life.

Although heartbreak is a normal reaction, for some it can become so intense or prolonged that it develops into depression or anxiety. It is important to take your own feelings seriously and seek help if needed.

Symptoms

  • Intense sadness and grief
  • Longing and missing the other person
  • Crying and emotional fluctuations
  • Sleep problems and changes in appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Anger, bitterness, or a feeling of injustice
  • Loneliness and emptiness
  • Ruminating and repetitive thoughts about the relationship

When should you contact a psychologist?

  • The grief is overwhelming and you cannot function in everyday life
  • A long time has passed without improvement
  • You experience depressive symptoms
  • You have thoughts that life is not worth living
  • The breakup triggers previous traumas or losses
  • You want help to move on

Treatment

A psychologist at Eyr can provide you with a safe space to process your feelings and help you understand and manage your grief reactions. Therapy can include working on accepting the loss, challenging unhelpful thoughts, restoring self-esteem, and gradually building a meaningful life after the breakup. The psychologist can also help identify patterns in relationships that may be useful to understand.
