Eye Infection

Eye infections are common conditions that can affect the eyelids, conjunctiva, or other parts of the eye. The most common type is conjunctivitis (pink eye), which causes red, irritated eyes with discharge. Eye infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergies, and treatment depends on the cause.

Video consultation is well-suited for assessing eye infections, as the doctor can see the condition of the eye via camera and make the correct diagnosis.

Symptoms

  • Red and irritated eyes
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Discharge from the eye (yellowish in bacterial infection)
  • Eyelids sticking together, especially in the morning
  • Tearing
  • Light sensitivity
  • Swelling of the eyelid
  • Feeling of a foreign body in the eye

When should you contact a doctor?

  • Red eyes with yellowish discharge
  • Eye pain (not just irritation)
  • Blurred vision
  • Symptoms that do not improve after a few days
  • Eye infection in children
  • You use contact lenses and experience symptoms
  • Swelling around the eye

Treatment

Bacterial conjunctivitis is treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointment. Viral conjunctivitis usually resolves on its own, but good hygiene practices are important to prevent spread. Allergic conjunctivitis can be relieved with antihistamine eye drops. A doctor at Eyr can assess your eye infection via video, make a diagnosis, and prescribe the necessary treatment.
